The immediate reconstruction of the breast following an operation for breast cancer has grown significantly in importance in the last few years. Recent initiatives try to offer every affected woman an immediate reconstruction when they have their breast removed. Specific counselling is usually offered in specialised centres. Immediate reconstruction can be carried out with autologous tissue and/or implants.

If the initial treatment involved removing the breast without reconstruction, this can be planned as a subsequent reconstruction. This operation is performed no sooner than six months after the breast has been removed, but any later date can also be selected. Even a later reconstruction can be carried out with autologous tissue and/or implants. Reconstruction of the nipple and areola is the last step of the breast reconstruction process. Various techniques are used for this. A sliding technique is most frequently used to site the nipple on the reconstructed breast. The areola is usually taken from the thigh in the form of a full skin transplant or tattooed.
